Cyberpunk platformer Replaced hits Game Pass on April 14
Sad Cat Studios' long-delayed 2.5D action game arrives on Xbox and PC this spring, letting you play as an AI trapped in a human body.
Sad Cat Studios and publisher Thunderful have announced that their 2.5D cyberpunk action-platformer Replaced will launch on April 14, 2026. According to an update on Xbox Wire, the game will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. It is also getting standalone releases for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The release ends a very long road for the developer. Sad Cat Studios has been working on Replaced since 2018. It first caught the public eye during the 2021 Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. The debut trailer showed off a striking visual style that blends dense pixel art with modern 3D lighting. I am a complete sucker for anything with a cyberpunk aesthetic, so I will absolutely be checking this out on day one.

An AI in a human body
The narrative drops players into an alternate 1980s America following a catastrophic nuclear event. You control R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence that has been forcibly downloaded into a human body. The gameplay loop mixes traditional 2D platforming with free-flowing action and stealth segments.
The combat system relies heavily on momentum and timing. Players need to parry attacks and manage crowds of enemies in tight 2D spaces. The developers have cited classic cinematic platformers as an inspiration for the movement and weight of the character.
The visual presentation is the main draw here. The developers built a custom rendering pipeline to make flat pixel art interact realistically with dynamic light sources and volumetric fog. The 2.5D pixel art style is a popular way for indie studios to evoke retro nostalgia using modern hardware capabilities. Games like Octopath Traveler popularized the HD-2D look, but Replaced takes a grittier approach. The environments are packed with neon signs, crumbling concrete, and heavy shadows. This specific flavor of post-apocalyptic cyberpunk leans hard into 1980s retro-futurism. You will see chunky CRT monitors and analog cassette tapes scattered across the ruined landscapes.
Eight years in the oven
Replaced is the debut title for Sad Cat Studios. Building a custom engine and a highly detailed 2.5D world as a first project is an ambitious undertaking. The game has seen multiple delays over its eight-year development cycle.
The corporate structure behind the game has also shifted during that time. Publisher Thunderful Publishing handles distribution for this release. Thunderful is known for indie hits like Planet of Lana and SteamWorld Build. The parent company, Thunderful Group, was actually acquired by Atari in August 2025. The Atari acquisition was a massive shift in the indie publishing space. Atari has been steadily buying up retro-focused studios and preservation teams like Digital Eclipse. Adding a publisher with a strong modern indie portfolio like Thunderful gives Atari a foothold in current-generation releases. Despite that corporate buyout, the release plan for Replaced remained intact.
Day one on Game Pass
Microsoft has used Game Pass to elevate several high-profile indie games over the past few years. Launching a debut game on a subscription service guarantees an immediate player base. This is crucial for a new studio like Sad Cat. Players who might hesitate to spend money on an unproven developer are much more likely to try it out when it is included in their monthly fee.
The game will be playable on current hardware. The developers confirmed it will run on the Xbox Series X|S and PC. April is shaping up to be a crowded month for Xbox releases, but this one has enough visual flair to stand out.
