Cyberpunk 2077 is finally coming to Xbox Game Pass this March

Microsoft is adding CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 and the indie sequel Planet of Lana II to Xbox Game Pass this March. The announcement came via the official Xbox Wire blog. The post detailed the first wave of additions for the month. Senior Community Lead Megan Spurr opened the post with a direct nod to the game's famous Keanu Reeves dialogue.

Cyberpunk 2077 originally launched in December 2020 across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The initial release struggled heavily on older console hardware. CD Projekt Red spent the next three years overhauling the game's underlying systems. This effort culminated in the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion in late 2023. Those updates completely rebuilt the skill trees, loot mechanics, and police AI.

Leaving the Xbox One behind

The game did not receive a native current-generation console version until early 2022. That update finally allowed the game to utilize the solid-state drives and faster processors of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The older Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions were eventually left behind. Those older consoles received no updates past version 1.6 and missed out entirely on the Phantom Liberty expansion.

The Game Pass release gives subscribers access to the base game. The game is already available for purchase on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. Sony previously offered Cyberpunk 2077 as a limited-time trial for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. A full inclusion in a subscription catalog is a major acquisition for Microsoft.

The final REDengine game

This release is a technical milestone for CD Projekt Red. Cyberpunk 2077 is the final project built on the studio's proprietary REDengine. The developer has already confirmed that all future titles will use Unreal Engine 5. That includes the next Witcher game and the Cyberpunk sequel codenamed Project Orion. The current 2.3 version of Cyberpunk 2077, released on July 17, 2025, pushes their in-house technology to its absolute limit.

Following up a 2023 puzzle platformer

The March lineup also includes Planet of Lana II. The original Planet of Lana released in 2023 as a cinematic puzzle platformer with hand-painted visuals. It drew heavy inspiration from classic cinematic platformers like Another World and modern equivalents like Inside. The sequel's inclusion on Game Pass follows the exact same release strategy as the first game. The original title also launched directly onto Microsoft's subscription service.

Microsoft's strategy with Game Pass relies heavily on mixing massive catalog titles with day-one indie releases. Putting a game as large as Cyberpunk 2077 on a subscription service usually brings a massive influx of new players. Waiting five years for a major RPG to hit a subscription service is a completely valid financial strategy.
