CyberConnect2 just announced .hack//Z.E.R.O. for consoles
CyberConnect2 is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a teaser trailer for a completely new entry in the long-dormant simulated MMO franchise.
Japanese developer CyberConnect2 has announced .hack//Z.E.R.O., a completely new game in the multimedia RPG franchise. The reveal comes via a short YouTube teaser trailer. The video was released to celebrate the studio's 30th anniversary.
The announcement video is strictly a teaser. It confirms the title and the start of a "new .hack project" but stops short of showing gameplay, naming specific platforms, or providing a release window. The YouTube description notes that previous entries were developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco. It does not explicitly confirm Bandai Namco's involvement in this new title, though the publisher owns the IP rights to the franchise.

Four discs to tell one story
The .hack franchise began in 2002 on the PlayStation 2. Long before modern anime popularized the concept of being trapped in a virtual world, CyberConnect2 built an entire multimedia universe around a fictional MMORPG called The World. The project was incredibly ambitious for its time. The narrative was split across four full-priced PS2 games: Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine.
Players experienced the game through a simulated computer interface known as ALTIMIT OS. You had to log out of the fake MMO to check fake emails, read fake message boards, and consume fake news articles about the real world. These out-of-game elements provided clues for where to go next and fleshed out the lore of a computer virus slowly destroying the internet. It was a bizarre and captivating way to tell a story.
Finding a complete physical set of the original quadrilogy today requires deep pockets. North American copies of the final chapter, Quarantine, routinely sell for over $300 on auction sites. We can only hope this new project prompts a remaster of those early titles.
The long wait since G.U.
A sequel trilogy called .hack//G.U. Followed in 2006. That series shifted the focus to a newer version of The World and introduced a more action-heavy combat system. Bandai Namco eventually bundled and remastered those three games (along with a short fourth chapter) in 2017 as .hack//G.U. Last Recode.
Since that remaster, the franchise has been entirely dormant on consoles. Fans have spent years asking for either a port of the original four games or a brand new entry. The announcement of .hack//Z.E.R.O. Finally answers the latter request.
CyberConnect2 was founded in 1996. The studio built its reputation on the Tail Concerto series and the Naruto Ultimate Ninja fighting games. They also created Asura's Wrath, an action game that pushed the boundaries of interactive anime spectacle. Returning to .hack for their 30th anniversary is a logical move. The series defined the studio's early years and proved they could handle massive, interconnected narratives.
We will need to wait for a full gameplay reveal to see how .hack//Z.E.R.O. Modernizes the formula. The concept of a simulated MMO was novel in 2002. Today, players are intimately familiar with the actual mechanics of online games, discord servers, and live-service economies. CyberConnect2 has to figure out how to make the fake internet feel mysterious again. The teaser trailer is just a logo and a promise right now. We will keep an eye out for actual gameplay footage in the coming months.
