Sega Saturn card-battler Culdcept The First is out now on Steam

Culdcept The First is officially available on PC today. Publisher CITY CONNECTION released the 1997 Sega Saturn exclusive on Steam, marking the first time the foundational card-battling board game has received an official English localization.

Monopoly meets Magic

Developer OmiyaSoft created the franchise in 1997. Founded just a year prior by Hideo Suzuki, the independent Japanese studio built a highly specific hybrid that plays like a cross between a digital board game and a collectible card game. Players take on the role of "Cepters," rolling dice to navigate a board. Instead of just buying properties with cash, you summon creatures from a customizable 50-card deck to claim territory, cast spells, and fight opponents who land on your spaces.

It is a highly effective way to ruin a friendship, just with more math and fantasy artwork than a standard board game night.

Despite earning a massive cult following in Japan and spawning sequels on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Nintendo 3DS that did eventually make it westward, the original Sega Saturn entry stayed locked to its home region for nearly three decades. OmiyaSoft spent the intervening years partnering with various publishers to keep the franchise alive, but the 1997 debut remained a historical curiosity for English-speaking players.

$30 and online multiplayer

The new PC release is priced at $29.99 on Steam. CITY CONNECTION built this version using their Saturn Tribute emulation engine, adding modern quality-of-life features that take the sting out of bad dice rolls. The port includes rewind controls and quick-saves, alongside full online multiplayer.

CITY CONNECTION has made a steady business out of rescuing stranded 32-bit arcade and console games. Their Saturn Tribute line has previously brought shooters like Cotton 2 and Layer Section to modern hardware, wrapping the original ROMs in an emulation shell that handles the heavy lifting of Saturn architecture.

The original soundtrack, co-composed by Yuzo Koshiro and Takeshi Yanagawa, remains intact. For players who want to test the waters before buying, a free demo is still available on the store page, allowing you to carry save data from the Story and Versus maps over to the full game.

The Steam launch comes at a time when modern indie hits like Slay the Spire and Balatro have proven that PC players have a massive appetite for deckbuilders. Culdcept was doing the hybrid card-game thing long before it was a dominant genre on Steam, and now the original blueprint is finally playable without a translation guide.

While PC players can start building decks in the 1997 original today, console ports of Culdcept The First for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch are scheduled to follow in September.
