Cronos: The New Dawn is getting a prequel story expansion this fall
Bloober Team is returning to its time-bending survival horror world with Cronos: Lazarus, a combat-heavy chapter starring the Warden.
Bloober Team and SEGA recently announced Cronos: Lazarus. It is a story expansion for last year's survival horror game Cronos: The New Dawn. The new chapter arrives in late 2026.
The base game launched in September 2025 and threw players into a time-bending, grotesque version of Poland. Players had to navigate between a ruined future wasteland and the 1980s to prevent a localized apocalypse. It also introduced a harsh combat loop. You had to incinerate enemies to stop them from fusing with nearby corpses. Now, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake is expanding that universe with a prequel.
A faster fight for survival
An oppressive tone takes hold right away. A somber voiceover talks about trying to find a solution and being haunted by someone's memory.
Dark, organic environments back up that mood. Human forms appear literally fused into the walls of the wasteland.
Lazarus puts players in the boots of the Warden before the events of the main game. He is still a Pathfinder at this point in the timeline. According to Bloober Team, this expansion has a faster and more aggressive combat style than the base game. Players will use teleportation and new striking abilities to outrun a relentless hunter. The main objective is to revive a lost "Essence" without alerting the Collective.
This pivot to action makes sense for a prequel chapter. The Warden is a heavily armed, imposing figure in the original story. Playing through his transformation from a standard Pathfinder into that specific role requires a different mechanical approach than the slow, methodical resource management of the original campaign.
Scanning the wasteland
Technological surveillance is a constant theme.

A floating spherical drone with a glowing red eye patrols a ruined, foggy cityscape. This scanning motif appears multiple times. A tactical HUD overlay analyzes a pale, mutated humanoid enemy from a first-person perspective.
The red drone also scans a mysterious, high-tech chair connected to thick cables inside a dark hall. It is a clear continuation of the base game's aesthetic. Bloober Team constantly mashed up retro-futuristic technology with grotesque body horror in the 2025 release, and that design philosophy is still front and center here.
The exact identity of the person the Warden is trying to save remains unclear. The tagline simply reads "Defy the calling. Bring her back." The voiceover implies that the rescue mission does not go exactly as planned.
Cronos: Lazarus will launch this fall across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The shift toward faster combat and evasion could be a welcome change of pace for players who have already memorized the enemy spawn patterns of the original release.
