Cotton RockWithYou hits Steam and consoles with 10 playable characters

SUCCESS Corp. And Studio Saizensen released COTTOn RockWithYou -ORIENTAL NIGHT DREAMS- today for PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The 35th-anniversary entry in the long-running cute 'em up franchise is currently sitting at a discounted $27.99 launch price on Steam, alongside its console and arcade debuts.

I absolutely love the Cotton series. I first played it on the TurboGrafx-CD, and the sheer absurdity of a selfish, candy-obsessed witch screaming her way through hordes of fantasy monsters left a permanent impression. That early CD-ROM port had incredible Redbook audio and voiced anime cutscenes that felt completely wild for the era. I've bought almost every port and sequel since, mostly just to watch Nata de Cotton terrorize her fairy companion Silk over a piece of Willow candy.

A very angry witch goes to Japan

The new game shifts the setting away from the usual Fairyland and drops Cotton into traditional and modern Japanese landscapes. Studio Saizensen built 16 stages for this campaign. The levels mix classic horizontal side-scrolling with sudden 3D perspective shifts. The core loop remains intact: shoot everything on the screen, collect crystals to upgrade your magic, and try not to get distracted by the massive boss sprites.

It works, which is the nicest thing I can say about the genre's chaotic visual clutter. You can play as 10 different characters. This continues the crossover trend established in 2021's Cotton Fantasy. Guest fighters this time around include Izuna from Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja and Psyva Ria from Psyvariar 3. Each character brings their own arcade mechanics to the table, and those mechanics completely change how you navigate the bullet patterns.

35 years of cute 'em ups

The franchise started in arcades in 1991 with Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams. SUCCESS Corporation basically invented the cute 'em up subgenre by swapping out the grim sci-fi military spaceships of the time for magical girls, fairies, and bright pastel colors. After a massive gap in new mainline releases following 1997's Cotton 2 on the Sega Saturn, the publisher finally brought the IP back to life for its 30th anniversary with Cotton Rock 'n' Roll.

That 2021 revival proved there was still an audience for this kind of arcade shooter. Now we are getting a steady stream of new games, alongside modern ports of cult classics like the pseudo-3D Panorama Cotton. It's a welcome change of pace from the long stretch of years where the series was entirely dormant.

Physical copies are out there

The digital versions are live across all storefronts, but collectors have options. Multi-language physical copies are available through Play-Asia and standard Japanese retail channels. The base game supports English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, Spanish, Korean, and Portuguese right out of the box.

The $34.99 standard MSRP is fairly reasonable for a niche arcade shooter in 2026. The 10-character roster adds some actual replay value. You just have to accept that your screen will be 90 percent explosions and candy wrappers at any given time.
