The next Cotton game hits Switch 2, PS5, and PC this August

Success Corporation has announced that Cotton Rock With You will launch on PlayStation 5, Switch 2 (a speculative platform name, as Nintendo has not officially announced a console named 'Switch 2' as of March 26, 2026), and PC via Steam on August 6 in Japan. The standard edition will cost 6,380 yen. A limited edition priced at 11,880 yen includes an art book, a soundtrack CD, and an acrylic stand set of the main characters.

It also includes French, Spanish, Portuguese, and several Asian languages. An arcade version is also in the works for Japanese game centers via the ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Version 3 service. Success recently wrapped up location tests for the arcade build at Akihabara Hey and Takadanobaba Game Center Mikado in Tokyo.

I love the Cotton series. I was a Turbo Duo kid back in the day, and I still own my original copy of Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams for the system. It was one of those games that proved the PC Engine and TurboGrafx hardware could handle arcade-quality shooters. When Success first teased this new project as Cotton Rock 'n' Roll 2 during their Tokyo Game Show 2025 lineup, I was hoping they would keep the momentum going from 2021's Cotton Fantasy. It looks like they did exactly that.

10 playable characters

The game will feature a total of 10 playable characters, including new guests such as Izuna from Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja and Psyva Ria, a character based on the player ship from Psyvariar 3.

These guest appearances are a fun nod to the publisher's back catalog. Psyvariar is a vertical shoot 'em up famous for its "buzz" mechanic, where players intentionally graze enemy bullets to level up their ship. Translating that mechanic into a side-scrolling witch game should be interesting. Izuna was a dungeon-crawling roguelike for the Nintendo DS. Seeing her throw ninja tools in a horizontal shooter is a weird but welcome crossover. The protagonist Cotton is also playable in a traditional Japanese oiran outfit.

The plot is the usual excuse to shoot things. Nata de Cotton is still obsessed with Willow candy. This time, her search for the sweets takes her out of her magical kingdom and into a fantasy version of Japan.

16 stages of cute 'em up action

There are 16 total stages. Players can choose from six main stages, which are padded out with various bonus and final levels. The core gameplay systems from Cotton Fantasy return. The traditional side-scrolling shoot 'em up mechanics are completely intact. Success says the fully voiced adventure segments between levels are longer than the ones in the previous game.

The Cotton franchise helped establish the cute 'em up subgenre when it debuted in arcades in 1991. Instead of piloting a spaceship through mechanical fortresses, players control a witch flying through haunted, colorful landscapes. The series went largely dormant after 2003, but Success revived it in 2021 with Cotton Reboot! and Cotton Fantasy to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

Cotton Rock With You is the official 35th-anniversary title. The fact that we are getting consistent, high-quality entries in a niche arcade shooting franchise in 2026 is a pleasant surprise. The shoot 'em up genre relies heavily on small, dedicated communities, and Success clearly knows how to cater to that audience.
