Classic Polish puzzler Robbo Millennium just launched on GOG

LK Avalon's puzzle-action game Robbo Millennium is now available on GOG. The release brings the 2000 PC remake of the Atari 8-bit hit to modern storefronts. It packs over 135 planets of grid-based puzzles into a single updated package.

The original 1989 Robbo was one of Poland's first major video game hits. Janusz Pelc programmed the game right out of high school. He and Tomasz Pazdan actually founded the LK Avalon studio specifically to publish it. The game quickly became a local sensation on the Atari XL/XE computers.

The premise is simple but punishing. You steer a small robot around a grid to collect scattered screws and fix your ship. It plays a bit like Boulder Dash without the gravity. You have to think three steps ahead before you accidentally trap yourself behind a magnetic wall or wander into the path of a laser turret. The game gives you tools like bombs to blow up rubble and keys to open doors, but resource management is strict. One wrong move usually means a dead end.

The Millennium upgrade

Robbo Millennium originally launched as a comprehensive Windows remake of the Atari original. It includes two distinct sets of levels. Players get the entire original campaign alongside a massive batch of new puzzles.

The updated visual style completely overhauls the graphics. The developers swapped the original chunky sprites for pre-rendered 3D models and detailed backgrounds. The environments vary wildly between planets. Some levels take place in red-carpeted factories packed with mechanical obstacles. Others drop the robot onto icy planets with crystalline structures and sliding mechanics.

The density of the puzzles ramps up quickly. Later stages fill the screen with golden robot statues, teleporters, and complex push-block mechanics. The game also includes a modernized electronic soundtrack to match the graphical overhaul.

The complete timeline

This release is part of GOG's official Preservation Program. The storefront went all out for the franchise. Alongside the paid Robbo Millennium release, GOG also dropped the original 1989 Atari version and the 1993 PC port (The Adventures of Robbo) entirely for free.

The 1993 DOS port had a completely different distribution path. It was published in the United States by Epic MegaGames. Epic distributed it as shareware, which introduced the Polish robot to a completely new audience in North America.

The GOG drop also includes a few other LK Avalon classics. Electro Man and Heartlight are now available for free. The release wave even includes Citadel Remonstered, an ambitious Doom-style shooter originally built for the Amiga.

GOG dropping the entire franchise at once gives players an easy way to see how the game evolved over a decade. The puzzles are just as ruthless as they were in 1989, but at least you do not have to load them from a cassette tape.
