Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters launches this August with 110 characters

Bandai Namco has set an August 28 release date for Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The sequel to 2020's Rise of New Champions adapts the "World Youth Arc" from the original manga. Series creator Yoichi Takahashi is supervising the new story campaign.

The game leans heavily into physics-defying sports action. A massive golden dragon spirit emerges from a soccer ball during a special shot, and a fiery phoenix follows another strike directly into the net. This is not a simulation game. It is a fighting game disguised as a soccer match, complete with health bars and special meter management.

A larger roster

Developer Tamsoft has expanded the scope considerably for this entry. The game includes 22 national teams and over 110 playable characters. The story mode follows Tsubasa Ozora through the Asian qualifying rounds against teams like Thailand, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and China. This campaign eventually leads to the World Youth Championship against powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and the Netherlands.

The 2020 predecessor established a solid foundation for this kind of anime sports adaptation. However, it suffered from occasional balance issues where certain super shots were practically unblockable. The new six-directional prediction system for goalkeepers appears directly aimed at fixing those exploits. The updated mechanic gives defending players a fighting chance against top-tier strikers like Carlos Santana.

The core mechanics have been updated to match the larger roster. Defenders can now execute over-the-top tackles and blocks using their own dedicated super moves. Goalkeepers also get a new tactical system for predicting and countering special shots. Penalty box encounters become stamina-draining duels where players must guess one of six directional shot predictions.

New chain systems

The flow of the match relies on a new Chain System. Players build momentum by successfully executing dribbles and passes. Maxing out this chain gauge allows forwards to unleash much faster, more powerful shots on the goal. Midfielders can also use the gauge to activate super passes that teleport the ball straight to the front line.

The game also introduces Miracle Actions. These are rare, dramatic comeback mechanics designed to turn the tide of a losing match. They mirror the unpredictable, last-minute saves that define the original manga series. Tadayoshi Makino returns as the sound composer, bringing over 80 new background tracks to accompany these high-stakes moments.

Pre-order bonuses and editions

Players who pre-order the standard edition get early access to the Brazil Youth team and two alternate versions of the "Moete Hero" background music. The pre-order package also includes cosmetic items, specifically the 2026 Japan National Team jersey and the World Youth jersey.

Bandai Namco is also offering Deluxe and Ultimate editions. The Deluxe package bundles the base game with a Season Pass, which adds six post-launch characters and a custom black soccer ball. The Ultimate edition adds even more cosmetics, though the core draw remains the expanded character roster.

Arcade sports games have mostly vanished outside of the Mario universe. The resulting gap leaves plenty of room for something that prioritizes flaming soccer balls over accurate offside rules. Anyone looking for a grounded recreation of the sport already has options like EA Sports FC. World Fighters is entirely focused on mid-air rivalries and supernatural goal kicks.
