Clear River Games and Taito have announced a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron Is Back! that includes a new expansion called Stardrop Mountain. The updated co-op platformer is scheduled to launch on February 25, 2027. Preorders are open now through the publisher's web shop, and the physical edition costs roughly $37.

The announcement from Clear River Games confirms the package includes all previous content alongside the new Stardrop Mountain stages. Taito originally released Bubble Bobble 4 Friends in 2019 for the first Switch. That game brought back the 1986 arcade formula of trapping enemies in bubbles, riding air currents, and popping everything on screen for fruit. A free update in 2020 added The Baron is Back!, which introduced 100 harder levels and the invincible arcade antagonist Baron von Blubba.

200 stages and an invincible ghost

This Switch 2 release pushes the total level count to 200. The Stardrop Mountain expansion adds brand new puzzle-platforming stages and introduces a villain named Invaduh. The core mechanics remain unchanged. You'll still get four-player couch co-op with Bub, Bob, Peb, and Pab. The modern game allows players to share lives and revive each other by popping their bubbles before they float off the screen, which makes the harder stages slightly more manageable. The original 1986 arcade version of Bubble Bobble is also fully emulated and included in the package. That original release had a memorable synthesizer soundtrack by composer Tadashi Kimijima and established the responsive trapping mechanics that defined the genre.

Taito has a deep catalog of classic arcade properties. Founded in 1953, the company dominated the early arcade era with Space Invaders before Fukio Mitsudo created Bubble Bobble in 1986. The original game followed the twin bubble dragons through 100 vertical stages as they tried to rescue their girlfriends from Super Drunk. It established a massive franchise that eventually spun off into Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, and the Puzzle Bobble match-three games.

Moving from the original Switch

Taito hasn't released much for the core series in recent years. This Switch 2 port is the most substantial update to the mainline platformer since 2020. I'm curious whether the new hardware allows for any visual upgrades, or if the port is strictly focused on delivering the new expansion. The original Switch release ran well, but it's possible the transition to Nintendo's next-generation console might offer faster load times or higher resolutions.

Clear River Games is handling the physical distribution. The Swedish publisher operates under the Embracer Group umbrella and specializes in retro and arcade releases. They previously handled European distribution for titles like Cotton Reboot!. The $37 asking price isn't bad for a physical Switch 2 release that bundles the base game, the previous expansion, and the new Stardrop Mountain content. Fans of classic arcade platformers will have plenty to play when the cartridge ships in February.
