Bob is bringing speed and weight back to Tekken 8 this August

Bandai Namco has announced Bob as the next downloadable character for Tekken 8's Season 3 pass. Early access begins on August 19. The full release arrives on August 24 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Players who purchase the season pass get the early access window, while individual character purchases open up on the 24th.

The American martial artist debuted back in 2007's Tekken 6. His fighting style revolves around his "speed and weight" philosophy. According to series lore, Bob intentionally gained a massive amount of weight to fight larger opponents while maintaining his original agility. The new default look leans heavily into his quirky personality. A new outfit called the "Bob Onigiri" surrounds him with his favorite snacks. He even claims the word onigiri means to "slay devils" before a match.

A return to form

Bob's gameplay retains his high-flying agility. He performs a skateboard trick in the middle of a Times Square-inspired stage before his match begins. His move set still relies on fast strikes combined with heavy momentum. The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade gives his attacks a lot of visual flair. The particle effects on his heavy strikes pop against the neon lights of the city stage. His character model also shows off the game's detailed muscle and clothing physics, even when those clothes are covered in cartoon rice balls.

Older players remember Bob's initial Tekken 6 iteration well. He was notoriously strong upon his debut. His combination of safe strings, fast punishment options, and high damage made him a frequent sight in tournament top eights. Bandai Namco eventually balanced him in subsequent updates and his Tekken 7 appearance. He remains a threat near the wall where his splat setups deal massive damage. During his Rage Art cinematic, he delivers an explosive punch that sends Kazuya Mishima flying across the screen.

The rest of Season 3

Bandai Namco also laid out the complete Season 3 roadmap. Kunimitsu already launched in the spring. Following Bob's summer release, the boxing kangaroo Roger Jr. will arrive in the autumn. Bandai Namco plans to show more of Roger Jr. on October 11 at EVO France.

Roger Jr. has been missing from mainline entries for a long time. The character last appeared as a playable fighter in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The return of animal fighters to the modern engine adds a bit of classic absurdity back to the roster.

A surprise guest

The biggest shock of the Season 3 lineup is the winter character. Yujiro Hanma from the anime and manga series Baki the Grappler will close out the pass. Fans of both properties have requested a Baki crossover for years. The brutal, no-holds-barred martial arts style of the manga fits perfectly with the Mishima bloodline's constant family violence.

Yujiro Hanma is known as the strongest creature on Earth in his source material. He regularly fights elephants and stops earthquakes with a single punch. How that translates to fighting regular humans like Paul Phoenix remains to be seen. His addition continues the series tradition of wild guest characters like Negan and Noctis from the previous game.

The Season 3 pass also includes a new Subsea Lockdown stage and the Aurora Outfit Pack for the existing roster. The Subsea Lockdown stage is an underwater facility. This adds another enclosed arena for players to memorize.

Bob has always been a divisive character in competitive play due to his mix of evasive maneuvers and heavy hits. His return gives players a few months to figure out how to counter his pressure before they have to worry about a kangaroo.
