BloodRayne's entire trilogy is getting a physical collection

Ziggurat Interactive and Strictly Limited Games are putting all three BloodRayne games on a single physical release for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The newly announced BloodRayne: Definitive Collection packs the modern remasters of the 2000s action games alongside the series' 2D spin-off. Pre-orders open on March 26.

The package includes BloodRayne: ReVamped, BloodRayne 2: ReVamped, and BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites. It puts the entire saga of the dhampir anti-hero onto one disc or cartridge for the very first time.

The original BloodRayne launched in 2002 from developer Terminal Reality. It dropped players into the boots of Rayne, a half-vampire working for a secret organization called the Brimstone Society. The first game has her chopping up Nazis, mutants, and occult monsters in the 1930s. The 2004 sequel moves the timeline forward to the modern day, where Rayne hunts down her own vampire father and his cult of followers. Both titles lean heavily into their M for Mature rating. The combat loop revolves around aggressive dismemberment and forcing players to constantly feed on enemies to restore health.

Both of those 3D games received modern ports in 2021 under the "ReVamped" moniker. Ziggurat updated the original Infernal Engine games with 4K resolution support, upscaled cutscenes, and improved textures. They also added modern gamepad support and fixed several lingering lighting and engine bugs that plagued the original console releases.

A complete genre shift

The third game in the box takes a completely different approach to the source material. Originally released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2011, BloodRayne: Betrayal is a 2D side-scrolling hack-and-slash developed by WayForward. The studio applied its signature 2D animation style to the franchise. The result is a game that looks completely different from Terminal Reality's 3D outings.

The version included in this collection is the 2021 "Fresh Bites" edition. That update added newly recorded voice acting from the original cast (including Laura Bailey as Rayne and Troy Baker as Kagan) alongside rebalanced difficulty options to smooth out the notoriously punishing original release. The 2D platforming and combat require much more precision than the 3D games, making those balance tweaks a welcome addition.

Limited Run Games previously sold standalone physical copies of these remasters back in 2021 for PlayStation 4 and Switch. Those print runs sold out years ago, pushing latecomers to the secondary market. This new Strictly Limited release skips the PS4 in favor of a native PS5 version, though Switch owners are getting another chance at a cartridge.

What is in the box

Strictly Limited is offering a few different versions of the collection through its official store. The standard edition includes just the game. The Deluxe Edition costs €59.99 (roughly $65) and comes with an array of physical extras.

The premium box packs in a printed game manual, an artbook, a sticker sheet, a physical soundtrack CD, and a reversible poster. It all comes housed in a specialized collector's box.

BloodRayne is a very specific product of its era. The combat is messy, the tone is aggressively dark, and the protagonist wears an absurd amount of leather. Gathering the entire franchise onto a single modern physical release saves collectors the trouble of tracking down three separate out-of-print copies, putting the whole 2000s time capsule in one place.
