AzaharPlus 2126.1-A adds ZipPass and direct system file downloads

The AzaharPlus 3DS emulator's new update bypasses the need for a physical console to get system files. Version 2126.1-A of the AzaharPlus project is available now for PC and Android. It brings the fork up to parity with the upstream Azahar 2126.1.1 build while adding features designed to remove friction for users with older hardware or missing system dumps.

To understand AzaharPlus, you have to look at the fallout from March 2024. When Nintendo settled with Tropic Haze LLC, the original Citra 3DS emulator went offline alongside the Switch emulator Yuzu. The emulation community splintered into several preservation projects to keep the dual-screen handheld alive. Azahar emerged as one of the primary successors. It focuses on strict compliance, requiring clean system files dumped from a real Nintendo 3DS. That strictness makes sense for legal preservation, but it leaves a lot of players locked out of their games.

AzaharPlus originally launched in early 2025 to lower those barriers. The project trades the strict compliance of its parent for immediate usability.

Direct downloads and older CPUs

The biggest change in 2126.1-A is how it handles those system files. The emulator can now download necessary system data directly from official servers. You don't need to hack a physical 3DS to extract your own firmware.

The developers also dropped the SSE4.2 instruction set requirement. This means older PC processors can run the software without crashing at launch. On the mobile side, the emulator restores compatibility with Android 9, opening the door for older phones and budget retro handhelds that haven't received OS updates in years.

Game file compatibility is now universal across the Citra family tree. If a ROM or dump works on any other Citra fork, it'll boot in AzaharPlus.

StreetPass through zip files

The Nintendo 3DS relied heavily on StreetPass for passive multiplayer and content unlocks. Since you aren't walking past other emulator users in the real world, AzaharPlus 2126.1-A introduces ZipPass. This tool lets users exchange StreetPass data by trading zip files over the internet. The update also folds in built-in cheat management, Amiibo generation, and better multiplayer compatibility with other Citra forks.

Android users get two installation options for this release. The "Replace" build uses the same application ID as the standard Azahar emulator. It overwrites the original app and shows up with a blue icon. It's the version to use if you rely on an Android frontend like Daijisho or Pegasus that targets the original Azahar package name. The "Coexist" build uses a new ID and a red icon, letting you keep both emulators installed on the same device.

The post-Citra reality

Nintendo's handheld sold over 75 million units before it was discontinued in 2020. The eShop closed in 2023. Physical cartridges are now the only official way to acquire games like Super Mario 3D Land or Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Emulating the 3DS is inherently awkward. You have to map a dual-screen device with a touch panel onto a single monitor or a standard phone screen. With Citra gone, forks like Azahar and AzaharPlus are doing the heavy lifting to keep that library accessible with resolution upscaling and modern gamepad support. I'm curious to see how Nintendo responds to a fork pulling system files directly from their servers, but for now, the update is live and the barrier to entry is lower than ever.
