AYANEO's new KONKR Pocket Advance just got its first visual reveal

AYANEO has released the first official images of the KONKR Pocket Advance, an upcoming Android handheld designed to mimic the 2001 Game Boy Advance. The company shared a recent teaser showing off the hardware's form factor. As we previously reported, the device was named earlier this month. This new update finally shows the physical design.

The images reveal a classic 3:2 aspect ratio display flanked by a classic cross D-pad on the left and standard face buttons on the right. Prominent shoulder triggers sit along the top edge. The layout is a direct homage to Nintendo's 32-bit portable, which shifted the entire Game Boy family away from the vertical orientation of the 1980s and 1990s.

Guessing the internals

The announcement stops short of providing a spec sheet. There is no confirmed system-on-chip, memory configuration, or price tag yet. Because official details are missing, I have to speculate about what is actually inside the shell.

Looking at the company's recent history provides a fairly clear roadmap. AYANEO has spent the last year building out its "Remake" line of retro-styled hardware. Their Pocket DMG, which launched in late 2024 for $449, targeted the original vertical Game Boy aesthetic but packed a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 processor. Their smaller Pocket Micro started at $219.

If the KONKR Pocket Advance follows the precedent set by the Pocket DMG, it will run an Android operating system and feature enough processing power to handle demanding emulation. A Snapdragon chip in that tier easily scales up to PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube titles. The 3:2 aspect ratio display shown in the teaser also suggests it is built specifically to match the original Game Boy Advance screen format.

The original Game Boy Advance used a 3:2 aspect ratio. Because the KONKR Pocket Advance uses a 3:2 aspect ratio screen, native GBA games will fill the display without black bars on the sides.

The current state of portable hardware

We live in a golden age of retro handheld emulation devices. Possibly because modern gaming is not in the best place right now. Players are looking backward for complete, offline experiences that do not require constant internet connections or seasonal battle passes.

Hardware manufacturers have noticed this shift. The market is currently flooded with devices trying to capture early 2000s nostalgia. Nintendo sold over 81 million units of the Game Boy Advance family before moving on to the dual-screen era. Games like Metroid Fusion, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap defined that era of portable gaming. That massive install base means there is a huge audience of adults who want a premium version of the plastic toy they carried around in middle school.

AYANEO started in 2020 by making bulky, expensive Windows handhelds. They have since pivoted hard into this premium nostalgia space. The KONKR Pocket Advance fills the most obvious gap in their current lineup. They already built the vertical brick and the micro novelty. The horizontal layout was the inevitable next step.

We are still waiting on a release date and final pricing. Given the usual cadence of these hardware reveals, preorders will likely open within the next few months.
