Atari is selling $40 smartwatch bands for Apple and Android

Atari, in collaboration with My Play Watch, has launched the "Atari 2600 My Play Watch," a standalone smartwatch priced between $79.99 and $89.99. This device plays four classic Atari 2600 games (Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout), tracks heart rate, steps, and calories burned. The initial release features designs inspired by the 1979 classic Asteroids and a general 1982 Retro aesthetic.

I have been following the influx of retro gaming merchandise over the last few years. We see a lot of t-shirts and coffee mugs, but wearable tech accessories are a newer category. My Play Watch previously collaborated with Taito for a Space Invaders watch, so they have a history of licensing classic arcade properties.

Vector graphics and 1982 aesthetics

The Asteroids design pulls its visual cues directly from the original 1979 arcade cabinet. It incorporates the stark vector art that made the Lyle Rains and Ed Logg space shooter stand out in crowded arcades. Asteroids was a massive hit in 1979, selling over 70,000 cabinets. The vector display gave it a crisp, bright look that raster monitors of the time could not match. Putting that specific high-contrast line art on the smartwatch makes sense from a design perspective. It looks like a technical schematic.

The second option, labeled simply "1982 Retro," leans into the general visual language of Atari's peak market dominance before the 1983 crash. The aesthetic of that era is heavily defined by warm colors, bold stripes, and the classic Fuji logo. Atari plans to add more limited edition designs to the collection later.
