Another Eden Begins is getting a physical Switch release in 2027

Aksys Games announced a 2027 launch date and physical editions for the time-traveling RPG Another Eden Begins during their Anime Expo panel on Friday.

The publisher released a new announcement trailer for the game, which is coming to both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The project reunites Chrono Trigger alumni Masato Kato and Yasunori Mitsuda. Kato is handling the scenario and direction, and Mitsuda is providing the main theme.

Rebuilding a mobile giant

Another Eden Begins is a reworked version of Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space. That original title was a free-to-play mobile game that launched in Japan back in 2017 before getting a global release in 2019. Developers Wright Flyer Studios and Studio Prisma are now rebuilding the experience from the ground up for dedicated gaming hardware.

The mobile version always stood out in the crowded smartphone market. It played more like a traditional single-player JRPG than a standard gacha game. The design relied heavily on its narrative and entirely avoided limited-time events. This allowed players to tackle story content at their own pace. The original game eventually received a Windows port in 2021, but this new iteration appears to be a complete structural overhaul rather than a simple resolution bump.

The trailer shown at Anime Expo leans heavily into the pedigree of its creators. Kato is a legend in the RPG space. He penned the script for Chrono Trigger and contributed heavily to Xenogears and Chrono Cross. Mitsuda composed the soundtracks for those same games. The teaser promises an adventure across the ages to save a lost future. That is exactly the kind of high-stakes temporal premise you want from this exact duo.

Two generations of cartridges

Aksys focused heavily on the Nintendo ecosystem during their Friday presentation. The game is also getting a PC release via Steam. Collectors will have to wait until 2027 for the physical Switch and Switch 2 copies.

The inclusion of the Switch 2 is a nice bonus for early adopters. Publishers are still navigating the transition period between the two platforms. Offering native physical cartridges for both generations ensures that players who haven't upgraded yet are not left behind. It also gives Switch 2 owners something new to put on their shelves.

I am genuinely curious how the pacing holds up in a premium package. Moving a massive mobile RPG to a standard console format requires a lot of structural changes to the progression systems. Balancing a game that originally relied on character pulls and microtransactions is a tough job. The developers will need to figure out how to distribute characters and resources that used to cost real money.

If nothing else, getting another time-travel story from the people who defined the subgenre in the 1990s is a solid pitch. The Chrono series has been dormant for decades. This is an entirely separate universe, but the creative DNA is impossible to ignore.
