Cotton Reboot HighTension! is coming to Switch and PS
The sequel to Cotton Reboot is heading to modern consoles with both digital and physical editions on the way.
Clear River Games has announced CottonReboot HighTension!, a direct sequel to the recent Cotton Reboot. The new shoot 'em up is coming soon to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles. It will launch digitally on the Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Players who prefer physical media can grab boxed copies for the Switch and PS5, according to Clear River Games.
Cotton is one of my favorite series. I think I own every port and sequel at this point.

A witch and her candy
The franchise began in 1991 when developer Success released Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams in arcades. It helped define the "cute 'em up" subgenre. Instead of piloting a spaceship through gritty sci-fi environments, players control Nata de Cotton. She is a hot-headed young witch with a singular motivation: acquiring a magical candy called Willow. She flies on her broom alongside her fairy companion Silk and blasts through colorful fantasy landscapes.
The gameplay loop revolves around shooting enemies to drop crystals. Shooting those crystals changes their color. The color dictates what type of magic spell Cotton equips, from fire dragons to lightning strikes. Players can also rescue fairies to act as options. These fairies absorb enemy fire and add to Cotton's own damage output.
Success ported the original game to the TurboGrafx-CD, Sega Genesis, and Sharp X68000. The series saw multiple sequels throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, including Cotton 100% on the Super Famicom and Panorama Cotton on the Mega Drive. The franchise then went dormant for years before experiencing a massive revival this decade.
Building on the reboot
That revival kicked off with Cotton Reboot! in 2021. Developer Beep took the highly regarded X68000 version of the original arcade game and completely overhauled it. They added high-resolution widescreen graphics, remixed music, and a new scoring system based on jewel collection and multipliers. It was a massive mechanical upgrade over the 1991 original.
The market went from zero Cotton games to nearly a dozen in the span of three years. We saw modern ports of Cotton 100%, Panorama Cotton, and Cotton 2. There was even a brand new 3D entry called Cotton Fantasy.
CottonReboot HighTension! is a direct follow-up to the 2021 reimagining. The "HighTension" subtitle suggests it will lean heavily into the fast-paced multiplier mechanics introduced in the previous game's Arrange Mode. In that mode, collecting jewels filled a gauge that triggered a massive score multiplier and powered up Cotton's shots. Keeping that gauge full was the key to high scores. The previous reboot pushed the screen clutter to absolute maximum levels. It works, which is the nicest thing I can say about my own reaction times trying to dodge neon bullets.
Physical copies skip the PS4
The release strategy follows a familiar pattern for modern niche titles. The digital release covers all current PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. The physical production run drops the PlayStation 4 entirely. Anyone wanting a disc or cartridge will need to buy the Switch or PlayStation 5 version.
Clear River Games has not provided an exact release date yet. The publisher only stated that the game is coming soon.
