Abathor's PS5 collector's edition gets a heavy metal trailer

VGNYsoft has released a heavy metal music video trailer to showcase the physical PlayStation 5 release of Abathor: Ultimate Extra Edition. The new video shows live-action performers shredding on metal instruments over a VHS filter, intercut with footage of the 16-bit action platformer and its physical collector's items. At least they are trying something different?

The digital version of Abathor originally launched on PC and consoles back in July 2024. VGNYsoft announced this PS5 physical release last month, and they are leaning hard into the retro aesthetic to sell the boxed copies. The trailer is unapologetically cheesy. The live-action band performs in front of a green screen that looks like it was pulled straight from a 1993 public access broadcast. The key art by Brolo is slapped across the screen with zero regard for modern graphic design trends. It works perfectly.

What is in the box

The Ultimate Extra Edition includes the game on a physical disc, a collector's box, an artbook, and a physical soundtrack. It's a 2D action platformer. You can play with up to four players in local co-op. You fight through Atlantis using arcade-style mechanics inspired by games like Golden Axe and Rastan, which means you will die a lot. The ESRB rated it Teen for blood and gore, and the trailer absolutely delivers on that promise with chunky pixel-art violence.

This specific edition also includes the gameplay updates added in the Ultimate version. Characters can now run, hitboxes have been adjusted, and the world map has been completely redrawn. The developers also tweaked the progression system and added new difficulty modes. They even threw in a rebalanced SpeedRun mode. If you found the original release too sluggish, these updates are designed to make the combat faster and more responsive.

The music itself has Lucas Shred on composition and Jamei Jordan on lead vocals. It's loud, aggressive, and perfectly matches the energy of hitting a giant pixelated skeleton with a sword. The video even shows the player character riding a massive blue eagle while fighting winged enemies. Just in case the guitar solos weren't subtle enough. The chorus is provided by both Lucas and Jamie, yelling about demons and glory over 16-bit gameplay footage.

Physical releases for smaller indie games are getting harder to find in 2026. VGNYsoft is clearly targeting the collector market here. They bundled everything into a premium package. The soundtrack includes music from chiptune composers like Soyo Oka and Gryzor87. Oka is best known for her work on the original Super Mario Kart, while Gryzor87 has composed for modern retro titles like Maldita Castilla. This is a solid package for anyone who wants a retro platformer and a physical artbook. The music video is just a ridiculous bonus.
