A new Team Rocket board game is launching this November

The Pokémon Company has announced a new physical board game titled Are You, By Any Meaning, Team Rocket? for release in November 2026. The publisher revealed the title via the Japanese Pokémon Info Bureau account alongside a few teaser images showing off the box art and components. A follow-up post simply asked, "You.. R?"

Based on the initial promotional photos, it appears to be a card-based game rather than a traditional board game with a map and tokens. The title alone heavily implies a social deduction mechanic, where players have to figure out who among them is secretly working for the villainous organization. Tabletop localization can be incredibly hit or miss.

Finding the hidden grunt

Team Rocket has been the primary antagonistic force in the Pokémon universe since Pokémon Red and Green launched in 1996. Their whole operational model revolves around infiltration, running fronts like the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City, and stealing rare Pokémon. Translating that into a tabletop experience where players hide their allegiances makes perfect sense. You can easily imagine a setup similar to Secret Hitler or The Resistance, just with more Koffings and fewer political assassinations.

The teaser images show a sleek black box adorned with the giant red "R" logo. The cards themselves have classic character art, including the familiar trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth, alongside various Pokémon associated with the organization. It is a striking design that leans hard into the late-90s nostalgia of the original anime run.

The Master Trainer days are over

Pokémon is obviously no stranger to the tabletop space. The Pokémon Trading Card Game is a massive pillar of the franchise. However, standalone boxed board games are much rarer. In 1999, Milton Bradley released Pokémon Master Trainer, a notoriously chaotic board game where players rolled dice to catch cardboard tokens and hoped they did not land on a space that sent them back to Pallet Town.

Since then, official tabletop releases outside the TCG have mostly been limited to themed Monopoly editions, Uno decks, or the occasional labyrinth variant. A bespoke card game with original mechanics is a welcome change of pace. The tabletop industry has exploded in complexity and popularity over the last decade. Franchises that used to just slap their art on a generic roll-and-move board are now partnering with dedicated game designers to create actual strategic experiences. If Are You, By Any Meaning, Team Rocket? follows this trend, it could be a genuinely good party game rather than just a collector's item.

Waiting on a localization

The November 2026 release window currently only applies to Japan. The Pokémon Company has not confirmed any international distribution plans. Importing Japanese board games is easy enough through proxy services, but playing a text-heavy, card-based social game requires everyone at the table to either read Japanese or constantly check a translation guide on their phones. That completely ruins the pacing of a game built around looking your friends in the eye and lying to them about your secret identity.

For now, fans of tabletop gaming and villainous syndicates will just have to wait for more details. The Pokémon Company promised more information soon.
