Microsoft just dropped the early September 2026 lineup for Xbox Game Pass. It is a solid mix. The list covers the usual day-one indies and catalog backfill, alongside a few major franchise spinoffs that I did not expect to see. According to the official Xbox Game Pass blog post, the rollout begins today and stretches through the middle of the month. Microsoft's subscription service relies on a constant churn of software to keep people subscribed, and this wave leans heavily into cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

1. Shelldiver (September 1)

You play as a turtle who fishes for jellyfish to sell at a shop. It is an incremental game. You will spend most of your time upgrading equipment to dive deeper into the ocean and explore different biomes. I usually bounce off these kinds of progression loops, but the art style is charming enough to warrant a download. It is available today across cloud, console, and PC.

2. SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed (September 3)

Fair Play Labs originally announced this sequel during the ID@Xbox showcase in April, and it finally lands on Game Pass this week. The 2016 original was a staple of local multiplayer nights. This new entry bumps the lobby size up to eight players online and adds a grappling hook. The core loop is still about outrunning your friends and knocking them off the screen. It will probably ruin a few friendships.

3. Dice a Million (September 4)

The premise here is exactly what the title says. You are trying to roll one million on a set of dice. It sounds like a joke, but these hyper-focused mechanics often hide a terrifyingly addictive core loop that can easily consume an entire weekend if you aren't careful. The game joins the Premium, Ultimate, and PC tiers on Friday. I want to see how long the joke holds up before it gets boring.

4. The Royal Writ (September 10)

Save Sloth Studios released this medieval roguelike deckbuilder on PC last year. It is brutal. The game revolves around a tactical combat system where you have to permanently sacrifice your own units to win battles. The Steam reviews have been highly positive since its August 2025 launch, and now it makes the jump to the Xbox ecosystem.

5. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage (September 10)

Sega continues to tweak its pioneering 3D fighting game. This updated version adds modern netplay amenities like rollback netcode and cross-play, which should make online matches much smoother. It also includes a brand-new single-player campaign called World Stage. Proper rollback is a massive upgrade. The new campaign gives solo players a reason to boot it up.

6. RuneScape: Dragonwilds (September 15)

Jagex is taking its 25-year-old MMO universe and turning it into a co-op survival crafting game. It is a big shift. This is the first time a RuneScape title has launched natively on home consoles, and the 1.0 release drops right in the middle of the month after a long stint in PC Early Access. I am curious to see how the classic skill trees translate to an action-survival format set on the continent of Ashenfall.

A few heavy hitters are leaving the service on September 15 to make room for the new additions. Cyberpunk 2077, Dead Cells, Frostpunk 2, and Spiritfarer are all rotating out. You have exactly two weeks to finish them. That is absolutely not enough time to clear Cyberpunk, so you might want to prioritize the others.
