4 highlights from the September PlayStation Plus drop
Sony's subscription service adds a console-first RuneScape survival game and a rare PS2 Mega Man RPG.
The September PlayStation Plus catalog update is live. The games actually hit the servers yesterday. The launch lineup includes a strange mix of massive survival games, annual sports titles, and early 2000s RPGs. Here are four additions worth a download.
A RuneScape survival game on a console
Jagex finally put a RuneScape game on a home console, and it only took them 25 years to figure out how to do it. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an open-world survival crafting spin-off that dropped into early access last year. Now it has hit version 1.0 on the PlayStation 5. The jump to a controller works better than expected for a PC-centric franchise. You get four-player co-op and dragon hunting. It's a nice break from clicking on trees.
The turn-based Mega Man X experiment
Capcom took the fast-paced platforming of the X series and turned it into a cel-shaded JRPG in 2004. It was a weird choice then. It remains weird today. This is the first time Mega Man X Command Mission has seen a modern re-release since its original PlayStation 2 and GameCube days, making it a genuine surprise for the Classics Catalog. The Premium tier version adds up-rendering and rewind support. I'm curious to see if the Cross Order System combat holds up without the nostalgia goggles.
The annual wrestling drop
The latest entry in 2K's wrestling simulation series joins the Game Catalog. WWE 2K26 has the usual mix of modern roster updates and Attitude Era nostalgia bait. The MyGM and Universe modes get their expected iterative tweaks. It's exactly what you think it is.
Two post-apocalyptic shooters in one package
4A Games bundled the remastered versions of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light into a single release back in 2014. The underground Russian wasteland is still incredibly bleak. The enhanced AI and rebalanced mechanics make the original 2033 much more playable today. It's a solid pickup if you need a linear shooter weekend.
PlayStation Plus Extra costs $16.99 per month and Premium costs $19.99 per month. The inclusion of Command Mission alone makes this month interesting for the retro crowd.
