Sony's new Wolverine PS5 bundle is extremely yellow
Insomniac and Marvel Games have revealed a Battle Yellow limited edition PS5 Digital console and DualSense controller ahead of Wolverine's September release.
Sony and Insomniac Games have revealed a limited edition "Battle Yellow" PlayStation 5 Digital Edition bundle and matching accessories for the upcoming release of Marvel's Wolverine. The hardware lineup includes the console bundle, standalone DualSense controllers, and separate console covers for the Slim and Pro models.
The design leans heavily into Logan's classic comic appearance. The console features a bright yellow finish with exposed claw marks that reveal the inner mechanical details of the hardware. The DualSense controller gets a similar treatment, with slash marks across the grips and touchpad. The game itself launches in September for $69.99, following its initial announcement during a PlayStation Showcase back in September 2021.
Sony suing nice people for no reason
I got a ps5 black cover from a third party before sony selfishly sued companies for creating custom panels. Now, buying official limited edition covers or full console bundles is the primary way to customize the system without breaking out the spray paint. Custom hardware bundles are a standard part of Sony's playbook for major releases. They did the same thing with a red PS4 Pro for the first Spider-Man in 2018, and again with custom plates for Spider-Man 2 in 2023. It now just feels icky buying one of these. But to each their own.
To create the Battle Yellow design, Insomniac and Marvel Games drew inspiration from Logan's Battle Reborn suit and claws, capturing his unmistakable intensity through the bold yellow finish.
A shift from Spider-Man
Insomniac Games has spent the last several years dominating PlayStation's superhero output. Following the massive success of the Marvel's Spider-Man series, Sony acquired the studio outright in August 2019 for $229 million. Marvel's Wolverine represents their second major Marvel franchise, but it takes a different structural approach.
The game drops the massive open-world structure of New York City. Instead, it aims for a more focused, narrative-driven action-adventure format. It is a formula that aligns well with the character's brutal, close-quarters combat style.
This release is another piece of the ongoing partnership between Sony and Marvel Games. Marvel Games reorganized under Disney in 2009 to license its intellectual property to third-party developers, leading to titles like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel's Avengers. Insomniac's corner of that universe has been the most consistently successful.
