Gundam is taking its massive 2027 convention on a global tour
Bandai Namco announced a massive roadmap leading to Gundam's 50th anniversary, including a global tour for Gundam-Con and a new Gundam Wing project.
Bandai Namco has announced that Gundam-Con 2027 will be a global touring event. The massive celebration kicks off at Makuhari Messe in Japan from January 9 to 11, 2027, before it heads overseas.
Gundam conventions are always in Japan. No more. The organizers announced the event will be held internationally as well, with more location announcements coming soon. Will Gundam-Con finally be coming to a city near you? Or more importantly, me?
The Spring 2026 conference outlined the road to the franchise's 50th anniversary.
The event is the kickoff for the franchise's road to its 50th anniversary in 2029. The Makuhari Messe show will combine several world tournaments that usually happen in separate venues. Gunpla builders, card players, and video game competitors will all share the same floor. The convention will also have massive physical exhibits and panels with series creators.
Wing gets a new animation
The Spring 2026 conference included several major media reveals. The biggest surprise is a new video project for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. The series, which turned 30 last year, was the entry point for an entire generation of Western fans when it aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in 2000. It introduced millions of viewers to the concept of giant robots having intense political debates. Bandai Namco kept the exact format of the new project under wraps.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is getting a theatrical release. The prequel story bridges the gap between the older SEED DESTINY television show and the recent SEED FREEDOM movie. SEED FREEDOM broke franchise box office records when it released, so pushing the prequel to theaters makes financial sense.
The original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam television series is also getting a full remaster ahead of the 2029 anniversary. The 1979 show has been released on DVD and Blu-ray multiple times. A ground-up remaster for modern displays is a massive undertaking given the age of the original cel animation.
The company also officially registered April 7 as "Gundam Day" with the Japan Anniversary Association. The date commemorates the original broadcast of the very first episode in 1979.
Building up to 2029
The 50th anniversary is still three years away. Bandai Namco is clearly treating the entire runway as an event. The global tour concept for Gundam-Con is the most ambitious part of the plan. Taking physical exhibits and tournament infrastructure on the road requires serious logistical work. The Gunpla Builders World Cup alone draws thousands of intricate plastic model entries from dozens of countries.
