French publisher Microids has announced a May 18, 2026 PC release date for Corsairs: Battle of the Caribbean, a modern reboot of the 1999 naval strategy game. The news came via a brief French-language trailer on the company's YouTube channel. The video title translates to "Corsairs - The Battle of the Caribbean drops anchor on May 18, 2026 on PC."

The original Corsairs: Conquest at Sea launched in 1999. Developed internally by Microïds (back when the company still used a diaeresis in its name), it was a PC strategy title that let players live out the life of a privateer. You could pledge your loyalty to nations like England or France, manage a fleet of ships, and try to dominate the 17th-century Caribbean economy. It was an ambitious game that suffered from some technical bugs and clunky audio. The core loop of trading and tactical ship combat still earned it a dedicated audience, and it received an expansion called Corsairs Gold shortly after release.

The console ports are missing

When Microids first revealed this reboot back in the summer of 2023, the press materials painted a much broader picture. The initial announcements listed versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch alongside the PC release.

This new trailer tells a different story. The May 18 date is explicitly for PC only, with the game slated for Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. There is no current word on whether the console ports were quietly canceled or just pushed further down the release schedule.

Typing games to pirate fleets

This new version is being handled by Belgian studio Fishing Cactus. It is an interesting pairing. Fishing Cactus is best known for Epistory - Typing Chronicles and Nanotale, which are adventure games controlled entirely by typing words on a keyboard. They have a history of building games around peculiar mechanics. Handing them a 25-year-old pirate management simulator is a pivot, but they are updating the 1999 mechanics with modern 3D graphics and a completely redesigned interface.

The core loop remains intact. You will navigate the Caribbean map, manage your fleet's economy through trade, and fight other ships using different ammunition types. When ship-to-ship combat gets close, you can initiate boarding actions using specific soldier classes to take over enemy vessels. The reboot includes the standard campaign and adventure modes from the original game. It also adds a new skirmish mode that supports solo play against AI or online multiplayer for up to four people.

Digging into the back catalog

Microids has spent the last few years leaning heavily into its European comic licenses. The company recently published everything from new Syberia entries to Asterix & Obelix beat-em-ups and the detective game Blacksad: Under the Skin.

Dusting off a late-nineties pirate management simulator is a deeper cut than usual for the publisher. The naval combat looks fun in the brief footage we have seen so far, and I hope to try it out when it launches this spring.
