Retro Games Ltd. And Plaion have announced THE 800XL, a full-size modern recreation of the 1983 Atari 800XL home computer.

Scheduled to launch on April 23, 2027, the $219.99 system features a fully functional mechanical keyboard and a working top-loading cartridge slot. According to the announcement trailer from Plaion UK, that slot is compatible with original Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE game cartridges.

The hardware ships with 25 pre-installed classic games and built-in Atari BASIC. It also includes an upgraded eight-button THECXSTICK joystick, while connecting an analogue controller unlocks two additional bonus games, Castle Crisis and Super Breakout.

Retro Games Ltd. Has spent the last several years building miniaturized retro hardware, including THEC64 Mini and 2024's THE400 Mini. The latter was a $119.99 plug-and-play console with a decorative, non-functional keyboard. A fake keyboard on a computer replica always feels like a missed opportunity.

THE 800XL bridges the gap between original hardware and modern displays. It outputs 720p and 1080p video over HDMI, supporting both 50Hz and 60Hz display modes. For players who do not own a massive library of original cartridges, the system allows USB sideloading for Atari 5200 and 8-bit ROMs. The emulation layer adds modern conveniences, including four save slots per title and a rewind feature to undo mistakes.

The inclusion of a working mechanical keyboard is particularly notable for preservation. The Atari 8-bit family was a creative gateway for a generation of programmers who learned to code using the built-in Atari BASIC. THE 800XL retains this functionality, allowing users to write, run, and save their own code just as they could in 1983.

The original Atari 800XL hit store shelves in late 1983. It quickly became the most commercially successful entry in Atari's 8-bit computer lineup, which originally debuted in 1979. The machine was built around the MOS Technology 6502 CPU and utilized proprietary coprocessors known as ANTIC and POKEY.

Those custom chips gave the 800XL a massive advantage in graphics and sound over many competing personal computers of the era. With 64 KB of RAM, vibrant color palettes, and multi-channel audio, it was a formidable gaming platform. It hosted software like Star Raiders, M.U.L.E., and Boulder Dash, cementing Atari's reputation in both the computer and home video game markets.

Plaion, formerly known as Koch Media, has been steadily increasing its footprint in the retro hardware space through its Plaion Replai division. The company is also handling the upcoming Neo Geo AES+ console. Atari itself has spent the last few years heavily focused on retro preservation, acquiring studios like Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios to remaster its classic catalog.

Pre-orders for THE 800XL are open now. Retail pricing is set at $219.99 in the United States, £199.99 in the UK, and €219.99 across Europe. The trailer boldly claims that "everything is better in 8-bit," and the inclusion of original cartridge support makes this one of the most ambitious retro revivals in recent years.
