System76's new Thelio Mira desktop is here with RTX 5090 support

System76 has released a redesigned version of the Thelio Mira, a high-end desktop computer engineered specifically for Linux operating systems. The Denver-based hardware manufacturer announced the system refresh today. The update brings new internal component options and an overhauled external chassis.

According to the announcement from System76, the new desktop starts at $1,799 for a base custom configuration. The company built this machine for heavy workloads like 4K gaming, machine learning, and software compilation. Buyers can choose between standard Ubuntu or Pop!_OS, which is System76's own custom Linux distribution.

Wood accents and better airflow

The original Thelio Mira launched in March 2021. This 2026 refresh introduces a completely new case design. System76 refers to its current aesthetic approach as "Precision Industrialism." The new chassis improves overall thermal performance and makes the internal components easier to access for maintenance.

System76 has a long history of advocating for the right to repair. The company has been building Linux-first hardware since 2005. They provide full documentation for their systems to encourage users to open the case, clean the fans, and swap out parts as needed. The new Mira continues this approach with a layout designed for straightforward serviceability.

You can put an RTX 5090 in it

The configuration options cover the highest end of the current consumer hardware market. The motherboard supports AMD's Ryzen 9000 series processors. Buyers can scale the CPU up to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, a chip specifically designed to brute-force high framerates in CPU-bound games.

Graphics options are equally heavy. The Mira has enough physical space and power delivery to handle the Nvidia RTX 5090. If you prefer an all-AMD system, the configurator also includes the Radeon RX 9070 XT. These massive GPUs generate a lot of heat. The engineering focus on the redesigned cooling layout directly addresses the thermal requirements of these next-generation cards.

Preconfigured or build to order

The base model starts at $1,799. The price scales rapidly as you add premium components. System76 offers a few preconfigured tiers for buyers who want to skip the custom build process. The Mira Premium model costs $4,599. The top-tier Mira Elite jumps to $6,249.

Linux gaming is in a very different place today than it was when System76 launched its first computers. Valve's Proton compatibility layer has made it possible to run most Windows games on Linux without major performance penalties. A machine with an RTX 5090 and a Ryzen 9000 series processor will easily handle modern releases at 4K resolution. It is also massive overkill for emulation, though it will certainly run PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Switch emulators at maximum internal resolutions without breaking a sweat.

The pre-built PC market is crowded. Systems designed from the ground up for Linux remain relatively rare. The new Thelio Mira gives developers and high-end PC gamers a way to bypass Windows entirely without sacrificing hardware performance.
