Steam Deck's latest beta fixes controller lag caused by rumble
Valve has pushed a new Steam Deck client update to the beta channel. It fixes broken achievement images and a strange latency bug affecting third-party controllers.
Valve has released a new client update for the Steam Deck, specifically for users opted into the Preview/Beta channel. The February 10 update addresses a specific regression regarding achievement images and tightens up input latency for players using external controllers.
According to the official patch notes released by Valve, this update is relatively small in scope but targets two annoying issues that have plagued recent beta builds. If you are running the Stable channel, you likely haven't encountered these bugs yet, which is exactly why the beta channel exists.
Rumble causing lag
The most significant technical fix in this patch concerns Steam Input. Valve notes that they have "improved input latency while controller rumble is happening on third party controllers."
This is an odd but critical fix. Steam Input is the middleware layer that sits between your controller and the game. It allows the Steam Deck to translate inputs from a PlayStation 5 DualSense, an Xbox Elite, or an 8BitDo Ultimate controller into something the game understands (usually xinput). It also handles the complex remapping features that let you assign keyboard commands to back paddles.
Apparently, the data traffic required to send rumble (haptic feedback) instructions to these third-party controllers was interfering with the speed of input registration. In high-speed action games or precision platformers like Celeste or Hollow Knight, a spike in latency every time you take damage, and the controller rumbles, is a recipe for frustration. By optimizing how this data is handled, the Deck should feel snappier when docked and paired with Bluetooth controllers.
Visual regressions
The update also fixes a regression that caused achievement images to fail to load. In software development, a regression is when a new update accidentally breaks a feature that was previously working fine. For the past few days, beta users unlocking achievements might have been greeted with blank placeholders instead of the intended art.
While this doesn't affect gameplay, the Steam ecosystem relies heavily on the dopamine hit of unlocking badges and icons. Valve has corrected the file pathing or rendering issue causing these images to vanish.
Remote Play and stylus support
The final note in the changelog addresses Steam Remote Play. Valve has "fixed hover behavior when using a tablet stylus."
Remote Play allows the Steam Deck to stream games from a more powerful desktop PC, or conversely, to stream its own screen to another device. While using a stylus with Remote Play is a niche use case, it highlights the flexibility of the SteamOS platform. Since the Deck is technically a Linux PC, users often try to interface with it using drawing tablets or touch screens. Correcting the hover state ensures that the cursor knows where it is before the pen actually touches the glass.
The cost of the bleeding edge
These fixes are currently available only in the Beta and Preview channels. Valve operates three main update streams for the Steam Deck:
- Stable: The default experience. Tested, safe, and generally bug-free.
- Beta: New features are tested here first. Bugs like the achievement image regression are common.
- Preview: The bleeding edge, often containing system-level changes that haven't been fully vetted.
