Sacred 2 Remaster is out now on Nintendo Switch

THQ Nordic has released a Nintendo Switch port of Sacred 2 Remaster. The game originally hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC back in November 2025. This new release puts the action RPG onto a handheld format. It completes the game's modern platform rollout.

The original Sacred 2: Fallen Angel launched in 2008 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Ascaron Entertainment built a massive open world filled with hundreds of quests, co-op multiplayer, and an absurd amount of loot. It was a messy, ambitious game. It crashed a lot. Players loved it anyway because of its sheer scale and deep character customization.

Light and shadow

The game takes place in Ancaria. You choose between a Light or Shadow campaign, which changes your available quests and how NPCs react to you. The class roster is bizarre in the best way. You can play as a standard High Elf or a Shadow Warrior, but you can also choose the Temple Guardian. That class is a cyborg dog creature with a laser cannon for an arm. The Ice & Blood expansion, which is included in this remaster, adds the Dragon Mage to the lineup.

Sacred 2 also has a unique mount system. Instead of just riding standard horses, each class gets a specific special mount. The Seraphim rides a saber-toothed tiger. The Shadow Warrior gets a hellhound. The Temple Guardian rolls around on a giant monowheel. These mounts are not just for travel. You can use your combat arts and fight enemies while riding them, which adds a completely different layer to the game's monster-slaying loop.

The Blind Guardian quest

You cannot talk about Sacred 2 without mentioning the Blind Guardian concert. Ascaron hired the German power metal band to record a specific song for the game. Players have to complete a multi-step quest across Ancaria to retrieve the band's instruments. The reward is an in-game cinematic where motion-captured fantasy characters play a heavy metal show in the middle of a glowing arena.

It is still one of the strangest crossover events in gaming history.

Modern updates

Development duties for the remaster were split between Fanatics, Jumpgate, SmirkingCat, and THQ Nordic. They worked together to upgrade the textures and smooth out the combat mechanics. They also implemented several bug fixes. The original release desperately needed those. The console versions that launched last year run at a smooth 60 frames per second at higher resolutions.

Playing a massive 2008 PC role-playing game on a train is exactly the kind of thing modern handhelds are built for. The inventory management alone should make a cross-country flight disappear.
