HeroCraft PC's post-apocalyptic 4X strategy game makes the jump to consoles after a year of heavy polishing on PC.

Revival: Recolonization is coming to PlayStation on February 26

HeroCraft PC has announced that Revival: Recolonization is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 26. The post-apocalyptic 4X strategy game is currently available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store.

This is not a brand new release. The game originally launched on Steam Early Access in June 2023 and reached its 1.0 version in April 2024.

The series actually has a surprisingly long history. HeroCraft originally released the first Revival game back in 2003 for Symbian mobile phones. That version squeezed a full 4X experience into a 100 KB file. This modern PC and console iteration expands on those early ideas with 3D graphics and much deeper systems. I mean, obviously, right?

A bumpy road to the apocalypse

If you look up the game's history on PC, you will notice a mixed reception. Revival: Recolonization had a lengthy pre-release period and struggled with balance issues during its early days. Random events often felt punishing rather than challenging, and the artificial intelligence had a habit of expanding faster than humanly possible.

Players who stuck with the game report a different experience today. HeroCraft spent the months following the 1.0 release patching out the worst difficulty spikes and polishing the core mechanics. The version arriving on PlayStation consoles benefits from that extended PC beta testing phase. It brings a much tighter strategy experience to the couch.

Hexes and terraforming

The premise puts you in the role of an Emissary. You wake up from a cryopod long after a rogue artificial intelligence destroyed human civilization. Your job is to unite the surviving primitive clans and rebuild society from the ashes.

Because the Earth is ruined, the terrain and weather are actively hostile. The clans you encounter have adapted to specific climates. These environments range from deep freezes to harsh deserts. If you march an army into a climate they are not prepared for, they will lose health or fail to gather resources.

The main hook here is the edict system. You can use ancient technology to terraform the map directly. You can raise mountains to block enemy armies, grow forests, or alter the temperature of a specific region to freeze out your rivals. You can even trigger spontaneous zombie invasions if you want to cause chaos in an enemy territory.

Customizing the army

Like most 4X games, you spend a lot of time looking at tech trees and hex grids. The science tree spans multiple eras. It covers everything from basic agriculture to advanced philosophy.

When diplomacy fails, combat plays out in turn-based tactical battles. You manage your army down to the equipment level.

You can customize unit loadouts with crafted components and use destructible cover on the battlefield to outmaneuver the enemy. The late-game footage shows massive cities with futuristic architecture that completely swallow up the hex grid.

The real test for Revival: Recolonization on consoles will be the control scheme. Strategy games with dense menus and deep customization trees often struggle to map comfortably to a gamepad. We will see how HeroCraft handles the transition when the port arrives next week.

If, like me, Civilization 7 didn't grab you, maybe give this one a try? It is officially entered my backlog.
