Revenant Dogma just landed on GOG

Kemco and Exe-Create have released Revenant Dogma on GOG. The role-playing game is available now on the DRM-free storefront alongside its predecessor, Revenant Saga.

Revenant Dogma originally launched on Android and iOS devices in 2015. It eventually moved to Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2018. A PlayStation 5 version with DualSense vibration support arrived earlier this year. The PC version has been tied to Steam for eight years. This GOG release is the first time the game is available DRM-free.

It is an indirect sequel to Revenant Saga. The two games share the same universe but follow completely different casts of characters. The game mixes 2D overworld exploration with 3D turn-based combat. The battle scenes use full-sized polygonal character models instead of the 2D sprite-based combat seen in most Kemco releases.

Transformations and limiters

The combat system revolves around a mid-battle transformation mechanic. Characters can change forms to boost their statistics and access specific skills. This system includes a limiter gauge that fills up as the battle progresses. If the gauge reaches 100 percent, the player loses control of the transformed character for three turns.

Combat also includes Burst attacks that deal heavy damage. Characters are placed in either a front or back row. Front-row characters deal and take more damage. Enemies in the back row can only be hit with ranged attacks. Turn speed dictates the flow of battle. Speed buffs are highly valuable for harder encounters. Unlike the previous game in the series, characters who are knocked out while transformed can be revived during the fight.

Weapon forging and labyrinths

Players can customize their gear through a weapon forging menu. Different types of ores provide stat bonuses and add specific effects to swords and armor. Forged weapons can be broken down into reinforcing materials or sold for gold. The system allows players to stack speed-boosting ores onto their gear to manipulate the turn order in combat.

The game includes procedurally generated dungeons. A specific labyrinth area offers shifting layouts and varying difficulty levels. The map changes every time the party enters. This area contains rare weapons that cannot be found in the standard story dungeons. Players can test their party builds here outside of the main campaign progression.

Humans and therians

The story takes place in a world divided between two factions. Humans worship holy gods and use relics to gain divine strength. Therians are humanoid beasts who worship feral gods. The two groups share a fragile peace that is constantly on the verge of collapsing into open war.

The protagonist is a human soldier named Caine. He infiltrates a ruins site looking for a feral relic and rescues a masked girl named Lilith. This event forces Caine and his partner Julie to flee into therian territory to avoid capture by their own military commanders. They eventually team up with a therian warrior named Fleon.

Exe-Create has built a massive catalog of budget RPGs over the last decade. Revenant Dogma stands out in that lineup mostly because of its 3D battle arenas. The polygonal character models give it the visual flavor of an early PlayStation 2 game. The story is entirely self-contained. Players do not need to finish Revenant Saga first to understand the plot, but the shared mechanics provide a familiar foundation.
