October 1st free games roundup
Five free games are available to claim today, including a classic shooter and a murder mystery.
There are five free games to claim today across the major storefronts. Here is what you can add to your library right now.
Amazon Prime Gaming
Amazon's October lineup is live, and subscribers get two solid titles. Both are available to claim until November 4.
DOOM
The 2016 reboot of id Software's pioneering shooter is free via a GOG redemption code. It revitalized the arena shooter formula with its push-forward combat and Glory Kills. I'm curious how well the multiplayer holds up a decade later, but the single-player campaign is still excellent.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit
Mega Cat Studios took the franchise in a different direction for its 10th anniversary, turning it into a 2D pixel-art adventure game. You get an Epic Games Store code for this one. The shift to a 16-bit point-and-click format is a welcome change of pace from the usual camera-checking mechanics.
Epic Games Store
Epic is giving away two titles this week, and they're both free to keep if you claim them before October 8.
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster
Nightdive Studios' 2025 remaster of the 1999 immersive sim is the headline drop. It adds co-op multiplayer, ultrawide support, and performance upgrades up to 144 FPS. I want to see whether the co-op holds up past the first hour, but getting the definitive version of a classic for free isn't something I'll complain about.
BURIED STARS
This is a 2020 mystery visual novel from Studio Largo. The premise traps contestants of a live survival audition show inside a collapsed building, and then someone gets murdered. It relies heavily on social media mechanics and branching dialogue paths to figure out who the killer is.

The Commute - On a Daily Journey into the Mind
Developer tintwotin released this short, choice-based visual novel about the horrors of a daily transit route. It's a quick browser-based experience that you can download and keep. The art style is stark, and the writing leans heavily into dark humor.
