A new post-apocalyptic Gundam anime is coming in 2027
Bandai Namco and Sunrise just revealed Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a companion series to the upcoming Rogue Orbit video game.
Bandai Namco Filmworks and Sunrise have announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new post-apocalyptic anime series scheduled for a 2027 release. The project is a direct narrative companion to the mecha action video game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT.
You can watch the initial teaser trailer on GUNDAM CHANNEL INTL or check the Gundam official website for early production details.
The Stand Alone Complex director takes over
Kenji Kamiyama is directing the new series. He is best known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Eden of the East. Sci-fi author Toh Enjoe is handling the script. The premise centers on humanity's forced evacuation from Earth, establishing a brand new timeline for the franchise.
The production team includes character designer STATO and mecha designer Eiichi Shimizu. Go Shiina is composing the music. Sola Animation is co-producing the series alongside Bandai Namco Filmworks. The short teaser trailer features frantic radio chatter about tearing the universe apart, setting a noticeably darker tone than recent television entries like The Witch from Mercury.
I think the post-apocalyptic angle gives Kamiyama a lot of room to work with. His previous shows excel at exploring the political fallout of massive societal shifts. Handing him a scenario where humanity has lost its home planet feels like a natural fit.
A century apart
The anime is only half of the overarching "RG Project" initiative. The other half is the video game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, which Bandai Namco revealed earlier this year at Summer Game Fest.

Both projects share a universe, but they do not take place at the same time. The video game is set in the year A.A. 135 (After Apocalypse), roughly a century after the events depicted in XARX-ZERO. The game puts players in control of the Gundam Helix, piloted by a protagonist named RE-X.
Developed internally by Bandai Namco Studios Inc., the game focuses on high-mobility melee combat against massive boss targets in deep space. It launches in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Gundam video games have a spotty history in the West. We get excellent arcade ports like Extreme VS, but the single-player action titles often feel like budget tie-ins. Rogue Orbit appears to be a much larger investment. The developers are emphasizing kinetic, fast-paced combat that requires mastering aerial mobility. If it plays anything like Armored Core VI (another Bandai Namco property), it could easily find an audience outside the core model kit demographic.
Building to the 50th anniversary
The original Mobile Suit Gundam aired in 1979. The franchise will hit its 50th anniversary in 2029. Bandai Namco is clearly using the RG Project to lay the groundwork for that milestone.
Creating a unified transmedia timeline allows them to push new narratives across multiple platforms simultaneously. It also guarantees a steady stream of new mecha designs. Bandai will inevitably release a dozen model kits for the XARX-ZERO protagonist suit alone, which is just how the system works.
We will likely see more crossover details as 2027 approaches. For now, the combination of Kamiyama's direction and a dedicated high-action console game makes the RG Project one of the more interesting Gundam developments in recent years.
