KADOKAWA is turning Sentenced to Be a Hero into a video game
The dark fantasy anime and light novel series just got a game announcement at AnimeJapan 2026, with VIC GAME STUDIOS handling development.
KADOKAWA has announced Sentenced to Be a Hero -Game of the GODDESS-, a new video game adaptation of the dark fantasy series. VIC GAME STUDIOS is handling development. The publisher revealed the project on March 28 during a stage event at AnimeJapan 2026 in Tokyo.
The franchise has grown at an absurd pace. Rocket Shokai started writing the original web novel in October 2020. Since then, it spawned a light novel series under ASCII Media Works, a manga adaptation, and an anime television series that just wrapped up its first season in March 2026. I always find it fascinating to watch a property jump from a web serialization to a massive multimedia franchise in just a few years. A second season of the anime is already confirmed.

VIC GAME STUDIOS takes the helm
KADOKAWA is publishing the title, but development duties fall to VIC GAME STUDIOS. The studio previously developed Black Clover Mobile and is currently working on Limit Zero Breakers. Some early reports incorrectly linked the studio to The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross, but that particular mobile hit was developed by Netmarble F&C.
The game will follow the series protagonist Xylo Forbartz. The story takes place in a dark fantasy world where the title of "Hero" is actually a punishment reserved for the worst criminals. These convicts are forced into a penal program and sent to the front lines to fight the Demon Blight, a contagion that turns living creatures into violent monsters.
The catch is that these heroes are not allowed to die. If they fall in battle, they are simply resurrected to fight again. The process takes a toll, stripping away a piece of their mind and personality with each revival until they become empty husks. It is a bleak premise that translates incredibly well to video game mechanics, especially if the developers lean into the resurrection aspect for gameplay loops.
No platforms announced yet
During the AnimeJapan 2026 presentation, KADOKAWA showed off a teaser visual and a short promotional video. The event itself concluded on March 31. The publisher has not yet announced which platforms the game will launch on, nor have they provided a release window or pricing details.
Fans of the series will likely recognize the setup. Xylo is a former Holy Knight Commander who was framed for a crime and sentenced to lead Penal Hero Unit 9004. He eventually forms a pact with a sword goddess named Teoritta. The dynamic between a disgraced knight and a praise-hungry deity forms the emotional core of the light novels, and it will be interesting to see how VIC GAME STUDIOS adapts that relationship into an interactive format.
This kind of cross-media expansion is standard operating procedure for KADOKAWA. The conglomerate holds massive influence across Japanese publishing and anime. They also have a deep footprint in the games industry through their ownership of studios like FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft. Turning a successful light novel into a standalone game is just the next logical step for the property.
