Heart of the Machine just hit 1.0 on GOG and Steam

Arcen Games and publisher Hooded Horse have released the 1.0 version of Heart of the Machine on PC . The sci-fi strategy game left its 15-month early access period today, March 6, and is available across GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store . It costs $30 on all storefronts. The full release wraps up a long development cycle for the independent studio. Arcen Games has been building and iterating on these mechanics in public since early 2025.

The game flips the script on Arcen's previous work. Instead of fighting against artificial intelligence like in the studio's AI War series, you play as the world's first sentient machine. You wake up in a crumbling cyberpunk city controlled by a massive corporation and immediately start making choices about how to handle the human population. You can build housing and act as a benevolent robotic dictator, or you can genetically engineer parkour bears and uplifted velociraptors to conquer the planet. The trailer even quotes Aristotle before showing a massive explosion engulfing a futuristic cityscape.

Cheaper than real world domination

The mechanics blend 4X grand strategy, city-building, and turn-based tactical combat. You do not just move troops on a map. You establish shell companies, hack into corporate skyscrapers, and manage an economy from the shadows. Combat draws inspiration from games like XCOM, but your arsenal is decidedly weirder. You can deploy small flying robotic spiders or simply toss jars full of weaponized bees at human enemies. The 1.0 update adds a new branching ending with four variants. These final scenarios involve everything from wormholes to full control over the city, and they can even result in the start of World War 4.

The long road to launch

Arcen Games spent 15 months refining the game in early access. During that time, the developer overhauled the prologue, added a regional map that lets players expand beyond the initial city limits, and introduced new ways to gather resources. The studio also added palaces for stray cats, because an omnipotent computer still needs a hobby. Publisher Hooded Horse has a solid track record with complex strategy titles. The company previously published Manor Lords and Against the Storm.

The visual style uses a mix of 3D models and non-photorealistic rendering techniques to create a futuristic, cel-shaded look. Arcen Games founder Chris McElligott Park specifically chose this art direction over pure 2D sprites to allow for more dynamic lighting and surreal environments. The engine handles complex city layouts and large-scale unit movements without losing readability. The launch trailer shows off this aesthetic with plenty of destruction, massive metallic dragon units, and a climactic mushroom cloud.

Time commitment

Park estimates a single playthrough takes about 25 to 40 hours. He also noted that seeing every branch of the story requires over 175 hours. The developer has explicitly stated the game is not designed to be played forever. The team prioritized a specific narrative arc over endless repetition. You do not have to commit to a thousand-hour grind, but you will need to clear your weekend if you want to see what happens when you throw a jar of bees at a corporate executive.
