Godzilla and Gamera are teaming up in Godzilla Battle Line

The two rival kaiju are fighting side-by-side as a single combo unit in the strategy game's latest update.

Godzilla and Gamera are teaming up in Godzilla Battle Line

Godzilla Battle Line just added a Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris collaboration to the mobile and PC strategy game. The February 27 update introduces three new units. One of them is a tag-team combo piece that puts Godzilla and Gamera on the same side.

Toho and Kadokawa rarely put their biggest stars in the same room. Kadokawa actually pitched a crossover film to Toho in 2002. Toho rejected the idea. Before this game update, their most notable official meeting was a 1970 stage show at the Osaka World's Fair. Now they share a health bar.

Two monsters on one team

The combo unit pairs the 1999 versions of both monsters. They function as a single four-star battle piece. The unit cannot evolve and cannot be used as a team leader. Once deployed on the board, a coordination gauge begins to fill over time and as the monsters attack enemies.

When that gauge maxes out, the duo unleashes a simultaneous Heat Ray and Fireball attack. This targets the enemy unit with the highest health. If no standard units are on the board, the attack hits the enemy leader directly. The blast also inflicts a burning status effect on the target.

The developers built in a fail-safe for when things go wrong. If either Godzilla or Gamera expires during a match, the surviving monster recovers half of its health. The remaining monster also gets an attack boost and a permanent damage reduction buff for the rest of its time on the board.

The Heisei trilogy antagonist

The other major addition is Iris, the titular antagonist from the 1999 film Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. The film was directed by Shusuke Kaneko and was the conclusion to the Heisei Gamera trilogy. Players can unlock the creature as two completely separate units.

The standard ground form acts as a traditional combatant that walks the board. It has the monster's distinctive tentacled design and blade-like arms. In the original film, Iris fed on human hatred directed at Gamera. Here, it just acts as a heavy hitter for your team.

The second version is a specialized flying form that glides over the map. Like the combo unit, the flying form of Iris is restricted by the game's rules. It cannot evolve and cannot be set as a leader. All three of these new units are discoverable through Expedition Maps obtained from ranked battles.

Three-minute matches

Godzilla Battle Line is a free-to-play real-time strategy game. Players build decks of kaiju and military weapons, then deploy them on a grid. The units march forward and attack automatically. Matches are capped at three minutes.

The game originally launched on iOS and Android in 2021. Now Production developed the title, and Toho Games published it. A Windows PC port followed in August 2022. You can download the game through the official website or standard mobile storefronts.

The roster previously included units from the Gamera Rebirth anime. Those specific pieces were rotated out of the active discovery pool earlier this year. Players who already unlocked them can still use them, but new players cannot pull them from standard maps. This makes the 1999 Gamera units the only current way for new players to get the giant turtle on their team.

Putting Toho and Kadokawa's monsters in a single unit is a clever way to bypass the endless debate over who would win in a fight. You just make them fight someone else.
