CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger have released a new teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, locking in an October 20 premiere date on Netflix. The minute-long video shows off a fresh batch of high-octane action sequences and confirms the exact launch window for the highly anticipated follow-up.

The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was one of my favorite anime, and based on this new footage, the second outing looks like a pretty insane season. Rather than trying to resurrect or continue David Martinez's completed narrative arc, the 10-episode standalone series introduces an entirely new crew of mercenaries trying to survive in Night City.

A new crew for Night City

CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger originally announced the project at Anime Expo in July 2025. The initial reveal confirmed the two studios were collaborating again, but this new teaser provides the first real look at the new cast in motion. The trailer is packed with the neon-drenched violence and kinetic animation that defined the first season.

The decision to move away from the original cast makes sense. The first season was a self-contained tragedy. A fresh ensemble allows the writers to explore different corners of the Cyberpunk universe without undoing the emotional weight of the 2022 series. The new characters are navigating themes of redemption and revenge, though the trailer keeps the exact plot details hidden behind a montage of explosions and cyberware malfunctions.

Kai Ikarashi takes the director's chair

There is a notable shift in the production team for this second season. Hiroyuki Imaishi directed the original series, but Kai Ikarashi is stepping up as the series director for Edgerunners 2. Ikarashi is already familiar with the material. He directed and storyboarded the sixth episode of the first season, "Girl on Fire," which is widely considered one of the visual highlights of the entire run.

He is joined by returning staff members. Bartosz Sztybor is back as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer, and Kanno Ichigo is handling the character designs. Studio Trigger is once again producing the animation. They bring their signature hyper-expressive 2D style to the project. Studio Trigger was founded in 2011 by former Gainax animators Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Otsuka. They built their reputation on dynamic action direction in shows like Kill la Kill and Promare. That background is obvious in the brief glimpses of combat shown in the teaser. The animation moves at a frantic pace, with bright flashes of color cutting through the dark alleyways of the city.

The October launch window

Netflix has heavily invested in video game adaptations over the last few years, funding projects like Arcane and Castlevania. Edgerunners remains one of their biggest critical successes in that category. The October 20 release date places the premiere squarely in the middle of the fall anime season. All 10 episodes will drop on the streaming platform simultaneously. This avoids the split-cour release schedules that have become common for other Netflix anime properties.

The first season premiered in September 2022 and became a massive cultural hit. It won Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards and drove a huge resurgence of players back to the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. Replicating that level of success is a tall order. The element of surprise is gone, and expectations are astronomically high.

Still, the creative team has a proven track record. The partnership between a Polish game developer and a Japanese animation studio seemed like a gamble four years ago. Now, it is one of the most reliable collaborations in the industry. The new trailer proves Studio Trigger still knows how to make Night City look incredibly dangerous.
