CachyOS Restructures NVIDIA Driver Packages Ahead of 590 Series Launch

As announced in a recent maintenance notice, CachyOS is overhauling its NVIDIA driver packaging structure. This move is designed to pave the way for the upcoming NVIDIA 590 driver series. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition from the current stable drivers to the next generation without leaving users staring at a black screen.

The Technical Shift

The primary change involves the current "NVIDIA Closed" driver package. According to CachyOS, this is being replaced by a new package labeled nvidia-580xx-utils. This specific version will serve as the stable foundation while the 590 branch is introduced to the repository.

Do You Need to Do Anything?

Probably not. The announcement includes a directive that will come as a relief to anyone who fears the terminal. If you have not manually modified your NVIDIA driver installation since setting up the OS, no action is required on your part. The package manager should handle the transition automatically during standard system updates.

"If you never changed something after the installation on your NVIDIA Drivers then you do not have to do anything!!" the announcement states.

However, users who have customized their driver setups or pinned specific versions might want to review the new naming conventions. This restructuring is essentially digital housekeeping. It ensures that when the NVIDIA 590 series eventually drops, the infrastructure is already in place to handle it gracefully.
