AYANEO opens pre-orders for the GBA-style KONKR Pocket Advance
The $89 retro handheld ships later this month with a Helio G90T chip and a 3.5-inch 3:2 display.
AYANEO has opened pre-orders for the KONKR Pocket Advance, a horizontal retro handheld that starts at $89 and will begin shipping to buyers later this month. The company revealed the final specifications and pricing earlier this week following an initial tease in July.
The device mimics the classic Game Boy Advance layout but packs modern emulation hardware. It uses a MediaTek Helio G90T processor. This chip can run PlayStation 2 titles like Tales of Destiny 2 at up to 3x native resolution.
The front has a 3.5-inch LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 960x640 resolution. A 4000mAh battery powers the system. It also includes a standard headphone jack, so you won't need an adapter to play in public. The handheld runs on AYANEO's custom Android software interface, AYASpace, which isn't always the smoothest experience on their previous hardware.
Hardware and ergonomics
The control layout includes standard face buttons alongside large L1 and R1 shoulder bumpers.
AYANEO separated the L2 and R2 triggers to improve ergonomics over traditional slab-style handhelds, which often cram the shoulder buttons too close together. You can choose from three color options: Coral, Grey, and Navy.
The $89 early-bird price point is competitive for a device handling PS2 emulation. We'll see how the Helio G90T holds up under sustained load and whether the battery life suffers when units begin shipping in late August.
