Atari Lynx Prototype of Malibu Bikini Volleyball Surfaces

There is something undeniably specific about the phrase "Malibu Bikini Volleyball" that instantly transports you to a very particular era of gaming marketing. It promises sun, sand, and digitized sprites that require a fair bit of imagination to interpret as "bikinis."

According to a new entry on Hidden Palace, a prototype build of this Atari Lynx title has been documented and preserved. The build is dated May 11, 1993, placing it just weeks before the game's North American release in June of that same year.

Version 0.25

The prototype, identified as version 0.25, was dumped by preservationist EricDeLee from an original EPROM cartridge. While the version number might suggest an early alpha, the date suggests otherwise. Being less than a month out from retail release implies this was likely a late-stage build, or perhaps the developers simply had a very humble versioning system.

For those who didn't own an Atari Lynx (statistically, that is most of you), the system was a beast. It offered a backlit color screen and hardware scaling years before the Game Boy Advance, but it also consumed six AA batteries in about the time it takes to play a single set of volleyball.

Preserving the Pixels

The documentation of this build is significant for preservationists. The Atari Lynx library is relatively small compared to its Nintendo rival, so every recovered development cartridge adds a meaningful piece to the puzzle of the system's history.

While the source notes the file itself was released back in 2011, the creation of this specific documentation page on Hidden Palace brings new visibility to the artifact. It allows historians to compare the code against the final retail release to see exactly what changed during those final crunch weeks in the spring of 1993.

It is comforting to know that while the batteries in our original Lynx units died decades ago, the code for Malibu Bikini Volleyball will live on forever.
