Astonishia Story's HD-2D remake heads West in February 2027

NIS America is bringing the HD-2D remake of Astonishia Story to Western audiences on February 11, 2027. The tactical RPG will launch on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

This is the same updated version that developer WayCoder and publisher Daewon Media released in South Korea back in December 2025. It originally launched there for the Switch and PC via the PURPLE platform. It's finally heading West.

Upgraded grid combat

The remake overhauls the classic Korean RPG with modern pixel art and high-resolution visual effects. Battles take place on a tactical grid where positioning dictates your success. You'll maneuver units to land side or back attacks while managing a roster of recruited mercenaries. Every character has unique skill sets, forcing you to adapt your party composition for different encounters.

The recent trailer shows off several elemental magic abilities and physical skills in action. A mage casts a massive Blizzard spell that covers the screen, while melee fighters execute attacks like Triple Cross and Sword Strike. While the core mechanics remain rooted in the 1990s, the updated graphics feature vibrant spell animations that look significantly better than the original PC release. I'm curious how the encounter balance holds up compared to that initial version.

A piece of Korean gaming history

Astonishia Story occupies an interesting space in RPG history. Originally developed by Sonnori in 1994, it was a massive hit in South Korea during the MS-DOS era. It later saw ports to the GP32 handheld and the PlayStation Portable, though those versions suffered from clunky mechanics and rough translations. This 2027 release represents the first time the game is getting a ground-up visual overhaul designed for modern high-definition displays.

Standard royal behavior

The plot follows knight Lloyd von Reuental as he tries to recover a stolen relic called the Cainan Staff. The Elven Queen wants to use it to awaken an ancient god. That's standard behavior for RPG royalty, but it provides a reliable excuse to travel across a fantasy map and fight massive red dragons. You'll need to talk to NPCs in towns to find optional party members willing to join the fight.

You can wishlist the game on Steam right now, or check out the official NIS America website for more details. Sony also uploaded a dedicated PlayStation 5 trailer confirming that specific console version. It's nice to see these older, historically region-locked classics finally get accessible global ports. The five-month wait until February gives you plenty of time to clear out your current RPG backlog.
