Mega Cat Studios and Santa Monica Studio have released God of War Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer set during Kratos' youth, on PlayStation 5 today. The game was announced and immediately made available for purchase during Sony's February State of Play broadcast.

This release marks a significant departure for the franchise, trading the over-the-shoulder cinematic camera of the Norse saga for a side-scrolling perspective that recalls the 16-bit era. It features a canon story centered on the relationship between Kratos and his brother Deimos during their brutal upbringing at the Spartan Agoge.

Two Kratos reveals in one night

Sony clearly decided that one angry Spartan wasn't enough for a single broadcast. Sons of Sparta was actually the second God of War announcement of the evening, following the reveal of the God of War Greek Trilogy Remake by Evil Empire and Motion Twin. While the trilogy remake is a modernization of the 3D classics, Sons of Sparta is an entirely new entry built from the ground up as a 2D experience.

Shadow-dropping a new game alongside a major remake announcement is a risky strategy. Usually, the smaller title gets swallowed by the hype of the larger one. However, the immediate availability of Sons of Sparta gives it a distinct advantage. You have to wait for the remake. You can play the prequel right now.

The cartridge connection

The choice of developer here is arguably more interesting than the game format itself. Mega Cat Studios is not a typical support studio. They are best known in the retro community for developing brand new games for obsolete hardware. They have released physical cartridges for the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis in recent years, including titles like Log Jammers, Little Medusa, and Coffee Crisis.

Handing a flagship PlayStation IP to a studio that specializes in working within the constraints of 1980s hardware is an inspired choice. It suggests that Sons of Sparta isn't just a modern game with a retro filter slapped on top. It likely adheres to the design philosophies of the era it mimics. Mega Cat understands pixel art and chiptunes not as an aesthetic affectation, but as a native language.

A return to the PSP lore

Narratively, the game focuses on a specific slice of history that fans of the PSP entries will recognize. The story explores the training of Kratos and Deimos. For those who skipped God of War: Ghost of Sparta on the PSP, or the PS3 collection, Deimos is Kratos' younger brother who was kidnapped by Ares and Thanatos because of a prophecy regarding a "marked warrior" who would destroy Olympus.

The tragedy of Deimos is central to Kratos' hatred of the gods, even if it wasn't fully fleshed out until 2010. By setting Sons of Sparta during their youth, Mega Cat and Santa Monica Studio are filling in the gaps of their relationship before the kidnapping occurred. It puts the focus on their cooperative dynamic, which translates naturally to gameplay mechanics where the brothers must work together to survive the Agoge.

Platform availability

The game is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 as of today, February 12, 2026. While Sony has been more aggressive about porting titles to PC recently, there is currently no word on a PC or PS4 version. Given the 2D nature of the game, it is unlikely to be technically demanding, but Sony often keeps these smaller, experimental spin-offs close to the chest initially.

This is the first 2D entry in the series since God of War: Betrayal, a mobile game released in 2007 for Java-enabled feature phones. That title was a surprisingly competent translation of the combat mechanics to a 2D plane. Sons of Sparta looks to be a much more robust effort, leveraging modern hardware to create fluid animations that flip phones could only dream of.
