A free Ghostbusters adventure game just hit itch.io
Indie developer bbgames-it has released a free, multi-platform point-and-click adventure game set in the Ghostbusters universe.
Indie developer bbgames-it has released The Unofficial Ghostbusters: The Adventure Game, a free fan-made title available now for Windows, macOS, and Android.
The game is hosted on itch.io. It takes the franchise into the adventure game genre. This steps away from the action-heavy focus of recent official releases. The developer's description is brief. It just asks "and who you gonna call?" alongside the game's key art. Fan games like this often rely on nostalgia, but they also give creators a chance to experiment with established characters without the pressure of a massive studio budget.
From Commodore 64 to itch.io
Ghostbusters has a massive footprint in video game history. The very first official game launched back in 1984 for the Commodore 64. Designed by David Crane, it was an ambitious blend of business management and action gameplay. That game actually predated the full theatrical release of the original film. This led to some strange design choices that players just had to accept at the time. It forced players to manage their franchise's bank account, buy a vehicle, and equip it before ever stepping foot in a haunted building. It was a surprisingly deep simulation for the era.
Since then, the license has bounced across almost every genre imaginable. The franchise hit a high point with the 2009 release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Co-writer Dan Aykroyd essentially treated that game as the third movie, largely because the original cast returned to voice their characters and the script felt authentic to the 1984 film. It focused entirely on the spectacle of destroying expensive hotel lobbies with a proton stream. More recently, IllFonic put out the asymmetrical multiplayer game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed in 2022. That game lets players hunt ghosts or play as the ghosts themselves.
This new release comes from bbgames-it.
Because this is an unlicensed fan project, it is completely free. Sony Pictures owns the rights to the franchise. Some rightsholders ignore free fan games entirely, but others bring the hammer down the moment a project gains traction.
It runs on Android too
The multi-platform release covers the major bases. You can grab the Windows or macOS versions for a traditional desktop experience. The inclusion of an Android build makes a lot of sense for the adventure genre. Point-and-click mechanics translate perfectly to touch screens. Tapping a screen often feels more natural than dragging a mouse cursor across a monitor.
The adventure game format is a perfect fit for the Ghostbusters universe. The movies are fundamentally about blue-collar exterminators investigating weird locations, talking to eccentric New Yorkers, and using cobbled-together technology to solve problems. That is the exact gameplay loop of every classic LucasArts or Sierra title. You investigate a room, pick up a bizarre item, and figure out how to combine it with your proton pack to clear an obstacle.
Official developers rarely touch the point-and-click genre anymore. It is usually up to indie creators and fan developers to keep the format alive. This release fills a gap for players who want a slower, more puzzle-focused take on the franchise.
