8BitDo's Retro R8 mouse just got a Commodore 64 edition

8BitDo has released a Commodore 64-themed version of its Retro R8 gaming mouse. The new C64 Edition is available now through the company's official store and Amazon for $50. It arrives as a direct companion to the Retro Mechanical Keyboard C64 Edition released last year.

The company originally launched the R8 mouse in late 2024 with a transparent green shell inspired by the original Xbox. An off-white NES variant followed a few months later. This third release is designed specifically to match 8BitDo's existing C64 mechanical keyboard. It swaps the translucent plastic for a heavy dose of 1980s beige and dark brown.

Retro computing aesthetics usually stop at the keyboard. Plenty of companies make beige keycaps, but matching mice are rare. 8BitDo is leaning into the bit by coloring the scroll wheel, side grips, and underside in a dark brown that matches the original 1982 home computer. The two side buttons are cast in a bright red that mimics classic joystick fire buttons.

Not just a paint job

The C64 edition keeps most of the internal hardware from previous R8 models. It has a PixArt PAW 3395 sensor and supports up to six levels of DPI adjustment. The maximum resolution hits 26,000 DPI. This is standard for modern gaming mice, but it feels slightly absurd when wrapped in a shell designed to look like a 1MHz computer.

You can connect the mouse via Bluetooth, a 2.4G wireless receiver, or a wired USB-C cable. When plugged in directly, the mouse can reach an 8000Hz polling rate. Wireless polling drops down to standard rates to preserve battery life. The 450mAh internal battery provides around 100 hours of use over Bluetooth and up to 105 hours using the 2.4G receiver.

There is one notable hardware change in this version. The Xbox and NES editions used Kailh Sword micro switches. 8BitDo swapped those out for HUANO micro switches in the C64 model. The company has not provided a specific reason for the switch change, but HUANO switches are generally known for a slightly stiffer, more tactile click.

Like the company's controllers, the R8 mouse works with the 8BitDo Ultimate Software app. You can use the software to remap the buttons, set custom macros, and adjust the polling rate. The app also handles the left- and right-hand mode switching, though the physical design of the mouse is ambidextrous.

A very beige dock

The mouse comes with a matching charging dock decorated with the classic Commodore rainbow stripes on the front. This dock is also a signal extension for the 2.4G wireless receiver. You plug the receiver into the dock, and then plug the dock into your PC. This keeps the wireless receiver closer to the mouse on your desk to prevent interference.

You can buy the mouse right now. This is a nice change of pace from recent hardware announcements that require a six-month pre-order wait. The beige and brown color scheme is a highly specific aesthetic choice for a modern desk. It exists entirely to complete the set for owners of the C64 mechanical keyboard. At 77 grams, it is light enough for daily use, even if it looks like it should weigh three pounds.
